NB-ESTATES IN HET NIEUWSBLAD: More and more Belgians are buying homes on the Costa Blanca, and they're getting younger too

The number of Belgians looking for a home on Spain's Costa Blanca is rising extremely sharply. This is shown by figures from the region's statistics department. Compared to last year, the number of Belgians looking for a place to live in the region increased by no less than 7.4 percent.

The appeal of Benidorm, Calpe and Torrevieja to Belgians has not yet worn off, quite the contrary. According to the latest figures from Observatoria, the statistical service of the Alicante region, in the third quarter of 2022, as many as 713 Belgians bought a residence in the region. This is a sudden and sharp increase of 7.4 percent compared to last year.

"The trend on the Costa Blanca is indeed remarkable," says Carl Vorsselmans, Antwerp-based manager of newbuildinspanje.com, which manages several real estate offices throughout Spain and has a good overview of the global Spanish real estate market. "The reasons for this are the large selection of properties at a reasonable price, the proximity to the airport of Alicante, but above all the sun security, even in winter. This is immediately the big advantage against the in winter rather bleak and rather chilly Costa Brava with Barcelona as its center."

"Some 80 percent of our Belgian customers opt for an apartment or penthouse," says Vorsselmans. "And quite remarkably: the profile of the buyer in Benidorm or other places is also increasingly younger, opting for several shorter trips, especially weekenders."

Belgians after the British

Belgians spent an average of 235,928 euros on a Spanish property with pool. This puts them in fourth place of countries that spend the most on a property in the province of Alicante. Belgians are the second largest group of foreigners in that region after the British.
